Makers North: The Spring Show

One of the things I love about being off work? I can attend all those weekend events that happen around the city. Working retail typically means you work all weekend, every weekend. There's always local craft shows I want to check out but I'm at work.

Not anymore!

A couple of Saturdays ago I did errands in the city with Emma. We made our way downtown and hit up the Makers North: The Spring Show late in the afternoon. Going to the event with a stroller made me realize I'd probably be a pain in the butt taking over a lot of space. So I figured going later in the day made the most sense since craft shows die off towards the end. There'd be more space for me!

I wanted to buy from pretty much every vendor. I think if it was closer to Christmas and I had gifts to buy for, I would have walked out with a lot more than I did. There were amazing smelling soy candles, personalized wine glasses and wool socks, adorable prints for the wall, handmade jewelry, and baby clothes.

The items I bought were ones I was eyeing up prior to the event. Things that I spotted on Instagram and Facebook.

The first was a pillow from Penny Goods. I had been eyeing up the dinosaur pillow before the event but after seeing pictures of their set up from the start of The Spring Show, I'm kicking myself I didn't go earlier. I clearly needed to buy Emma the big orange cat pillow. But luckily, I can just watch for them to do another local craft show and buy her another pillow!

I also bought a couple of hair bows from Alfie + Iris. I completely fell in love with them when I found their Instagram. Their bows are so pretty. And the material... ugh! As a fellow fabric addict, I want all the hair bows because of the fabric! They use gorgeous vintage-looking fabrics. I'm a little mad I didn't pick up their new Malibu Barbie-looking print bow. But again, maybe at their next show.

And because I was hungry and they actually had product left, I went home with 2 donuts from Beards Bakery! We try to visit their bakery regularly to try new things and they were set up at the show across from a friend's booth, so it was fate!

Whether I apply for future Makers North shows this year or not, I'll definitely attend them to do some shopping and to check out the local vendors. The feeling at these shows is so energetic and they inspire the crap out of me. I leave them with creativity bursting from me. It helps keep me in check when preparing for my own craft shows that I'm vending at.

Speaking of which, I'm off to cut out some new projects for my next show!

Mom

I wanted to be a mom for a very long time. Luckily, being in Canada, I have a year off to stay home with my baby. No one really knows what to expect when their baby shows up. Plus every baby is different, including their personalities and habits. I've lucked out with a good baby; she sleeps well, she's not too fussy and we haven't experienced colic. However, she still prefers our arms than a bouncer or swing. But we both get decent sleep (her more than me. I'm functioning though. Most days. With multiple cups of coffee).

I figured after we got into a routine I'd be back to sewing and baking. In my head I was so going to nail this staying at home with the baby. I also had plans to meal prep, scrub the house from top to bottom weekly, start working out... this is so not the case.

Quickly you realize how much you need to and want to entertain your baby and show her the world around her. I've taken to making animal noises, singing to her, and pointing out colours and shapes around the house. Yep, she definitely thinks her Mom is a professional singer with how much I sing to her. Then there's tummy time, the multiple feedings each day, and the never-ending diaper changing. Because she's reached the age where she 'talks' a lot now too, I also feel like I shouldn't watch TV as much. I need to interact with her and have silly conversations.

Don't take this as complaining. Watching her face - her eyes lighting up, her mouth copying my mouth, the sounds she makes - are all worth every single moment I spend away from cleaning, cooking, and even trying to eat (my meals all seem to get postponed due to Emma time).

I know things should get easier (and harder in a sense) once she can hold up her own head, hang out in her exersaucer, hold her own bottle, etc. I should be able to multi-task a bit better. Hopefully. That's the plan. But who cares? As long as she's happy, I'm happy. We'll make this work.

Meet Emma

As I said in my previous post, my pregnancy went pretty smoothly.

I was lucky to not deal with morning sickness. Well, just very mild nausea here and there when hunger struck or from certain smells. Coffee turned my stomach during first trimester but by third I was craving it. I didn’t have any fun cravings. I just found myself dealing with food aversions most of the pregnancy. And by the end I had such bad heartburn that I ended up avoiding a lot of foods to prevent it.

My biggest complaint about my pregnancy was the water retention I had. I was a giant swollen pregnant lady by the end. My feet barely fit in shoes and I had cankles for the last three months. It was horrible. But overall I enjoyed being pregnant. No symptoms were unbearable.

We found out at our 20-week anatomy scan that we were having a girl which made everything incredibly real. Now I could try to picture our baby, think up names, and call the baby ‘her’ or ‘she’. I loved feeling her kick and hearing her heartbeat throughout the pregnancy. I made a point of talking to her constantly. The more she kicked, the more I talked and rubbed my belly. I feel like I bonded early with her.

My labour was the most difficult thing I dealt with during the entire pregnancy. It was pretty traumatic for me and I still have a hard time thinking back to it. The fear and stress is still so real. It started with my water breaking in the bathroom of a restaurant. That's when it hit me that the show was starting and our baby would be here soon. It was so surreal. So long story short; I went to the hospital, I was induced, a fever set in, our baby’s heartbeat went too high, I wouldn’t dilate fast enough, an emergency c-section was required. It was a crazy night. But in the end we ended up with a healthy baby girl. That’s all that matters.

I know I was lucky to have such a great pregnancy and end up with a healthy baby. I feel absolutely blessed when I hold her in my arms. So I'm here to introduce you to Emma...

She was born in time for Easter so we had fun doing an Easter photo session with her. Adam did a great job playing photographer, and yes I know I'm biased, but I believe she's the cutest little bunny.

Where Has the Time Gone

Wow. Where to start?!

Last year was a bit of a blur. Life got overwhelming and crazy and wonderful. Not everything was great but the year ended amazing. And so far 2018 has been really good.

We decided to move at the beginning of last year; sell our house and find our forever home. We wanted to purchase something a bit nicer, bigger and in a great neighbourhood. This meant we had to head out of the city to find something we could afford. This lead to months of stress while we got the house ready, had house viewings, open houses, and then finally we got an offer! We were left with a short closing date so we had to go crazy looking at homes quickly to find something sooner than later. Well, we found our dream house! We had about a month to pack up our house and move into the new place. It was nuts! But it was all worth it.

This past summer we also found out I was pregnant. We were over the moon! But also shocked and amazed since it finally happened. I feel like the summer was a very surreal time for us. There was so much excitement but also fear of something bad happening. Plus with the stress of selling our house, I was scared I had too much on my plate. But things continued fairly smoothly during my pregnancy.

Today I sit in our new house with a 7 week old baby girl and I’m very happy. Don’t get me wrong, life isn’t perfect. But I’ve found peace. I’m in a good place. I’m doing my best to find joy every day, in every little thing.  And this little girl has made my heart overfill with love. I’m so excited for this chapter of my life.

Weekend Adventures

This past weekend we headed down to Hamilton for Easter. We squeezed in two delicious Easter meals with each of our families and also hit up a few stores we hadn't been to in a while.

Tea for the drive in my pretty new Spring travel mug.

We made a stop at Kool Stuff Toys and came across some crazy amazing latex characters like this Krang. We were informed they were made by The Devils Latex who I instantly recognized as a fellow comic con seller when I checked out their Instagram.

We're getting our supplies together to buy a couple of baby turtles so we made a stop at Big Al's which is pretty much like visiting a small aquarium.

They actually had some baby red-eared sliders which we badly wanted to take with us but we're waiting on the store here to get theirs in so we don't have to take the turtles on a five hour drive.

We made a quick stop in Big B Comics as well where I picked up my Lumberjanes trade and found another Ultimate Spider-man to add to my collection.

It was a lovely weekend visiting family but it's nice to be home now. The snow has melted quite a bit over the last couple of days and I'm itching to start working on outdoor projects and to open up my windows.

I hope you had a great Easter weekend.

To Do List: January

It's cold. Today when I woke up it felt like -40 degrees Celsius with the windchill and it didn't warm up much. This afternoon it felt like -35. It's easy to be a homebody in this weather. Stay in a warm house, drinking hot drinks, and wrapped in blankets. Don't get me wrong, that was how I spent most of my morning and evening. But I have to get out of the house sometimes. I need sunshine and to just leave the house.

So in spirit of getting out of the house or at least off the couch this month, typically one of the colder Winter months, here's my January to do list:

- ice skating on Ramsey Lake
- exercising regularly at home
- have a board game night, even if it's just with Adam
- start prepping for my first comic convention of the season (March is not that far away... eeek!)
- go for snowy but sunny afternoon walks

What are your favourite Winter activities?

My Life In Photos: Holiday Edition

Christmas and New Year's Eve was pretty great. We headed down to Hamilton on Christmas Eve and spent four days there visiting family and friends. We exchanged gifts there with each other and with our family and friends and I was completely spoiled. Before heading to dinner on Boxing Day, me and Adam did a small bit of shopping and bought mainly movies, TV boxsets, and comics. Once we got back from Hamilton, we've been doing a lot of sleeping and watching TV to recover from the busy holiday. This is why I was happy to stay in on New Year's Eve and relax. I needed to recover before starting the new year!

We received the majority of our Christmas cards the day before Christmas Eve which was a lovely surprise.

I was dressed and ready for Christmas Eve at 9 a.m. since we had a 5 hour drive ahead of us. Good thing dresses and tights are comfy.

The tree at my parents'.

Dressed and ready for Boxing Day dinner at 8:30 a.m. since we were heading out shopping first.

Seymore has been a snuggle monster since we got home. I'm not sure if it's because he missed me or because the cold is getting to him.

Some toys and plushies I got!

My comic and manga haul.

I have been making a pot of coffee each day I've been home since we got back. I received this Crumbs Bake Shop coffee for Christmas and it's delicious.

2015 started with snow and sunshine!

Once we entered the new year, I packed up the Christmas decorations and cleaned the house. It feels like a positive way to start the year.

I hope you had wonderful holidays and were spoiled with love, food, and gifts!

December Activities

Anyone else excited that Christmas is THIS week?!?! I'm incredibly excited! To get in the Christmas spirit I've been fitting in Christmas activities wherever I can... Christmas movies, building gingerbread houses, wrapping gifts, writing out cards, and consuming festive treats!

What have you been doing to get in the holiday mood? Countdown till Christmas is on!

Weekend Adventures

Working retail at Christmas takes over your life. It's not the most fun but I'm doing my best to squeeze in as much holiday fun as I can this month.

A couple of weekends ago we had some family come up to visit. It was a great weekend and I consumed so much good food and laughed so much.

I made a cinnamon maple coffee cake and fruitcake cookies for the weekend and they both turned out great. I'm going to share the recipes next week.

The entire house decided to have a nap or disappear into video games (ahem, Adam) so I hung out with cats in the basement for a bit.

We picked up the Marge ornament while out shopping at Target.

We checked out the Festival of Lights!

And brought home a Red Lobster take-out bag for Seymore.

While Seymore partied in the paper bag, we ate lots of treats and played games.

This was definitely my highlight of the month because since then I feel like I've been living at work and in a time crunch when I'm at home.

I hope you have a good weekend! I'll be at work and doing my best to stay in the Christmas spirit!
