5 Fandom Friday: Fandoms I LOVE But Didn't Think I Would

It's another 5 Fandom Friday post and this prompt is fun to brainstorm. Honestly, I'm pretty open to new shows, movies, and books. But there are a few things I was unsure about or hesitated a bit to before giving them a try.

1. YA books

I'm clearly a huge Young Adult book fan. But I was pretty hesitant to start reading them initially. I found myself really into the 'Chick Lit' genre after college and devoured some really easy, light-hearted books. Then a friend kept recommending John Green books and I finally took the plunge and haven't looked back. It's easily my favourite book genre. I didn't realize that I could read some seriously interesting books that involved supernatural and fantasy aspects, mental illness, or growing up pains.

2. South Park

My brothers were always into South Park and I would watch the odd episode. I enjoyed them but I never saw myself sitting down with South Park boxsets and watching all the episodes. Well, it eventually happened and I'm happy it did. I'm a big fan of the show. I find it hilarious and I love the real world topics they cover

3. Cats

I was scared of cats growing up. My Nan had a cat that attacked me often and I had two cousins who found it hilarious to somehow get their cat to swat me. Then I moved out of my parents' and the idea of getting my own pet, one I could have in an apartment easily, excited me. In came Seymore. I had a few moments of, 'what the hell did I get myself into?'. Now, 8 years later, and I'm a full-fledged cat lady.

4. Supernatural

I knew of the show and it peaked my interest a bit. But it was so far into the seasons that I just didn't have the time or energy to give to another TV show. Then I moved away and I had more free time on my hands. I gave Supernatural a shot and I'm still completely addicted and in love with the fandom.

5. Doctor Who

This was another TV show that I couldn't get away from. A friend watched the first season (of the newer seasons) and didn't have rave reviews for it so I just forgot about the show. I didn't think I'd be into a cheesy, sci-fi show. A couple of years went by and comic conventions had me dreaming of a TARDIS, which I knew nothing about but it was everywhere! I ended up changing my mind and decided to give the show a chance. I was hooked pretty quickly and I'm still binging the seasons.

What fandoms are you into that you didn't think you'd like?

5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

I believe I was always a geek. Growing up with two brothers who I was pretty close with opened my world up to more video games, action figures, cartoons, and movies than I think I would have been exposed to if I didn't have brothers. Honestly, they actually introduced me to some of the fandoms I'm still into today.

1. Harry Potter

I didn't even know who Harry Potter was when my youngest brother received the first three Harry Potter books for Christmas. But after he read through them I decided to give them a go and, well, that started my obsession and need to read all of the books as soon as they came out. Never until this series did I know what it felt like to wait impatiently for a book or a movie to come out.

2. Nintendo

We always had some Nintendo console in our house and the amount of hours I put into Mario Kart, Mario Party, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and other multiplayer games is insane. To this day I have a weakness for Nintendo-only games and will never turn down the chance to play a Mario, Donkey Kong, or Kirby game.

3. Hello Kitty

My best friend in high school introduced me to the adorable world of Sanrio. She took me downtown to some small independent stores that were filled with Japanese stationery, candy, and tons of Hello Kitty merchandise. Never would I have guessed that this would start my love for Japanese culture and all things cute.

4. Supernatural (theme, not the TV show)

I was a kid who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and reading Christopher Pike books. I was into ghosts, vampires, and other supernatural things. This interest has continued on with me as I read fantasy and supernatural books and watch shows like Grimm, Supernatural, and iZombie. I've become someone who enjoys being creeped out.

5. Beverly Hills 90210

This was MY show growing up. I was addicted to the drama, fashion, and the California setting. This was the first television show that I watched every week and knew everything about. And now I still find myself loving similar television dramas - The O.C., Gossip Girl, Felicity, One Tree Hill, Pretty Little Liars... they might not be all the same but the cheesy, over dramatic story lines get me hooked every time.

What I'm Loving Now

January has been so cold and snowy. In the last three weeks I've become a hermit. And I'm ok with that. The Fall was super busy and I have sewing, TV shows, and books to catch up on. Plus, the weather outside isn't too friendly.

Winter

I had mentioned in my Reading Challenge post that I had started the latest Lunar Chronicles book, Winter, just before the new year. It was a long audio book at 23 hours. Long for me anyways. Typically the audio books I listen to range from 6-12 hours depending on the book. So 23 hours took me a bit to get through.

Once I got into the story I found myself listening constantly and flew through the last half. I won't give any spoilers but it was a good book. It wasn't my favourite book in The Lunar Chronicles series, but it was an entertaining book that wrapped things up nicely. I found myself rooting for certain characters and relationships, and I got a little teary eyed a few times too. I thoroughly enjoyed the 'Snow White' aspects throughout the book as well, since Winter is based on that fairy tale (like all the books in The Lunar Chronicle series).

The synopsis from Goodreads:

"Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana."

Supernatural

I decided to play catch up with Supernatural again. I always find myself binge watching this show and in the middle of cold Winter seemed like a perfect time. I started season 9 a couple of weeks ago and I only have a few episodes left. No matter how long this show goes on, the Winchesters, Crowley, and Castiel entertain the hell out of me. I think I might be tempted to head right into season 10 with how season 9 is playing out.

Also, look at my FBI Winchester Pop! Vinyl figures I got for Christmas! I just love how accurate they are, even the stance on both of them!

What I'm Loving Now

This Spring and Summer I have found myself getting giddy like I did when I was 13 years old for nail polish. In early Spring, I actually stopped at the nail polish display to look for a new colour for my toes since the weather was getting nicer and what did I see? So many different glitter and confetti nail polishes! That was my weakness when I was a young teenager!

I picked up two Revlon polishes in the Spring:

Girly

Whimsical

I'm completely in love with both of them! I've been wearing them constantly and by themselves. I like the semi-sheer look and it's not so noticeable when it starts to chip off.

I actually paired Girly with the Pinkie Pie polish I got for my birthday. My toes look like pink frosting!

Pinkie Pie toes! #MLP #mylittlepony

While looking at nail polishes, I've been drooling over the Nicole by OPI line... they have so many glitter and confetti polishes! Like ones with hearts and stars. Seriously, my inner 13 year old keeps getting excited when I look at the polishes. I ended up buying one of the polishes from the Selena Gomez line for Nicole by OPI. I picked up Confetti Fun and just put two coats on with no other colour underneath and it looks so awesome! This isn't my photo but this is exactly what my nails look like:

Anyways, that's enough nail polish talk. As usual, I'm normally behind on new television shows. But I actually jumped on this show sooner than normal. I have 3 episodes left of Orange is the New Black and I'm seriously addicted! I kept hearing about the show on twitter and I had no idea who was in the show, but I love the cast! And I love Laura Prepon all over again (first time was as Donna in That 70s Show).

I'm also watching and about half way through Season 7 of Supernatural. Orange is the New Black slowed me down a bit, but the Winchester Boys have been doing an excellent job entertaining me in this season though.

Do you check out the shirt a day sites? I could have a serious spending problem if I didn't have self control. They always have the cutest geeky mash-up shirts. Well, Tuesday night as I was going to bed I received an email from Ript Apparel for their shirt that was going on sale the next day... I almost died from the cuteness... a Powerpuff Girls and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mash-up?!?! Holy crap. I definitely bought this shirt and I'm beyond excited to get it in the mail!

Current Obsessions

I started watching Doctor Who yesturday! I say that with an exclamation mark because even after a few episodes, I get the love for the show. I was loving the Doctor and Rose together by the second episode. Their relationship is adorable! I'm excited to continue on and see David Tennant as the Doctor after this season.

I also started Season 6 of Supernatural recently. As usual, the story arc for this season has grabbed my attention and I want to keep watching episode after episode once I start. So far my favourite episode this season is, 'You Can't Handle the Truth'. Dean and Bobby make me laugh and I loved their honest conversation in this episode.

Who's up to date with The Walking Dead?!?! I've been on the edge of my seat during every recent episode. I have no idea what's going to happen and what the season finale will bring but I'm so excited for the last 2 episodes! I'm also a little scared about who might die...

The Girls season finale was good in my opinion. I'm very curious to see how Marnie and Charlie's relationship evolves next season. And even though Hannah's OCD bothered me this season, I do love that Adam came to her rescue at the end of the show. The 10 episode season is so short and it feels like a tease. It's frustrating to now have to wait for the next season!

We also started playing Rayman Origins which is super fun! I love playing video games with Adam but it can keep us up so late some nights. Besides lots of TV watching and video game playing, I've been continuously listening to She & Him's new single. I'm incredibly excited for their new album which comes out May 7th. Their album is going to be a perfect soundtrack for Spring days!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! We have some friends coming over tonight for games and drinks!

Current Obsessions

What current obsessions post doesn't include something about Supernatural?!? I've clearly been obsessed with this show for the last 6 months. I'm half way through Season 5 and it's so ridiculously good right now! And I have a new favourite character in Castiel.

I had to post this picture... it's very accurate!

Me and Adam are finishing up Season 2 of Pushing Daisies... we only have 2 episodes left! I absolutely adore this show and I hate that it ends after Season 2. And not only have we been watching this show regularly, but it makes me crave pie all the time!

I'm going to be taking a small break from Supernatural after Season 5 to watch the first season of Portlandia. I keep being told to watch it so I'm excited to start it and I love Fred Armisen!

Since visiting Big Al's last weekend and seeing these adorable Golf Ball Goldfish, I have become obsessed with them! If you have seen me in person over the last week, there's a likely chance I goggled images of these fish and showed them to you. Adam offered to let me use one of his many aquariums for a couple of them so we'll see.

I'm still reading my X-Men comics. I'm currently reading issues from 1993. I also read the first issue of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I love, love, love Andy Price and Katie Cook working on this series together. Price's artwork is so perfect and I love Katie's writing and humour! I'm so excited to read the second issue which I just got.

I feel like I need a whole year off to watch and read everything!

Current Obsessions

Considering the time of year, Christmas music has been playing non-stop around me. I listen to tunein radio or AccuRadio while I'm on the computer. And most radio stations are now playing a Christmas song at least a few times every hour so even at work I'm listening to Christmas music.

Last week, me and Mary went to see Meaghan Smith again at The Pearl Company here in Hamilton. It was the 'It Snowed' tour so it was extremely Christmasy. The venue had twinkle lights up and there were decorations hanging from the ceiling. And Meaghan played a bunch of her Christmas songs. It was such a great show. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy haha.

Work has been getting very busy and my free time has been spent preparing for Christmas or working on Sparklegirl-business things. I've been making a point of getting into bed a bit earlier everyday though. Even if it's just to read and shut my mind off before going to sleep. I just finished the first Sailor Moon manga. It was so good and cute. I'm excited to continue reading the series. It was a very fast read.

I'm half way through my first manga, #SailorMoon 1, and I'm really liking it. It's cute.

I do own the second Sailor Moon but I thought I'd break up the books with Ultimate Spider-man. I bought the first 2 volumes of this Spider-man series at Big B Comics a couple of months ago. I've been told by a lot of people that I'll enjoy it so I'm excited to start it tonight.

Next in my to-read pile! #SpiderMan #comics

I recently started Season 4 of Supernatural. Oh man, is it good! If you don't watch this show, you should and when you get to Season 4 you'll be even more hooked than you previously were. It doesn't seem possible but the story gets so good. In between Christmas movies, I'll be watching as much Supernatural as possible over the next couple of weeks.

Current Obsessions

How is your weekend? It doesn't feel like a Saturday night for me. I have to work tomorrow so today feels like a Sunday. It's throwing me off. But I had a good, though short, weekend. Friday evening was spent doing errands and buying a new chair at Ikea with Adam. Then today, we went for a family reunion/picnic for Adam's side of the family. Luckily it was in Welland so we didn't have far to go. The rest of the day has been spent packing and stuffing pillows. I've been very productive.

Last week I finished up Season 1 of Supernatural. Oh my, the season finale left me hanging! I need to get Season 2 as soon as possible but I have a feeling I won't be able to start it until after we move. I really love the show. The chemistry between Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) is great and pretty funny. I'm excited to see how they grow as I watch the rest of the seasons.

Some episodes definitely play up my childish fears I have about the supernatural as well. I can end up freaking myself out watching the show while home alone.

I finished up Supernatural with just enough time for me to squeeze in Season 7 of Bones before we move. I know I'll be finished the season by next weekend and then I can watch the new season as it airs on television.

With Fan Expo coming up in 5 days, I'm definitely getting excited about looking around the huge convention. I love seeing all the booths setup and picking up all the freebies everyone is handing out. I have a list of some things I want to look for and buy at the show. Besides some Supernatural products, I'd love to find these new figures.

How cute are they?!?!

If you're going to Fan Expo and you spot any of these Hello Kitty figures, please come find me and tell me where they are! haha. I need them in my life.

I'll be posting some finished craft projects on here in a couple of days. I'm so incredibly happy with my stock for this year's Fan Expo. I have so many items that I'd love to keep for myself.

Well, I hope you're having a great weekend!
