Fall Inspiration

July isn't over yet but I have already been seeing glimpses of Autumn everywhere. A couple of weeks ago I spotted some pumpkin scented candles at Bath and Body Works, the grocery store already has boxes of Halloween candy stacked out, back to school supplies line the aisles at Target and Walmart... it's a little crazy.

Honestly though, I'm loving it. I'm enjoying Summer and I really truly needed some sunshine-filled days because this past Winter was too long. But, I'm already longing for Autumn... the cooler weather, layered clothing, pumpkin everything, boots...

So this upcoming weekend is the big move! I won't be around much online but I'll be back next week!

My Life in Photos

Moving day is this week! Eeek! July was a great month but it blows my mind that it's pretty much over.

We started the month off watching fireworks at Bell Park for Canada Day.

I love seeing the fireworks over the lake.

I was shocked to see Autumn-scented candles at Bath and Body Works already. But honestly, I'm not complaining.

I seriously love how much my kitties love each other.

From another walk at Moonlight beach.

I'm currently reading the Age of Apocalypse saga. It's pretty great.

I bought the new Miss Manga mascara from L'Oreal so I've been playing around with my makeup a bit more this month.

I hope July was fabulous for you!

What I'm Loving Now

My life is just crazy lately. Between getting ready to move into our house (next weekend... omg!), working on sewing projects for Fan Expo Canada, and planning Summer Camp for IGGPPC, every day just flies by! But I've been having some fun in between all the madness!

Dresses

Of course I had to go through all my clothes while packing up. I was definitely holding on to things that just don't fit anymore or are falling apart (dresses with little holes in it). This means my closet has some space in it again and even though this will scare Adam, I've been eyeing up a few dresses on ModCloth.

I am completely in love with the cut and prints of these two dresses.

Decorating

I have been having a blast looking for things for the house. I've been enjoying some free time going through stores looking for the perfect lamps and adding things to my mental wish list that would work perfectly with the colour palettes I'm eyeing up. At this point I would like a Target shopping spree!

Lily Allen

I've been a big fan of Lily Allen for years now. Her music is super catchy and her lyrics are always fun. I've been listening to her new album, Sheezus, while working on the computer. It's becoming my Summer album.

The Geekie Awards

On Monday, July 14th, The Geekie Awards were announcing the top 5 nominees in all their categories. This meant all of these nominees were invited to their live show on August 17th. A few months back, over at International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club, we entered our website into the nominations. But as I sat in a waiting room on July 14th, I found out that IGGPPC was announced as one of the top 5 nominees in the Websites & Blogs category. All of the staff members were chatting furiously on Facebook messenger and twitter blew up... I got all teary-eyed while sitting by myself waiting for a thyroid ultrasound. I was just blown away and ended up speaking complete jibberish to the ultrasound technician. It was a memorable moment.

To explain a bit more, The Geekie Awards is an award show celebrating all things geek. The judges are geeks and they're celebrating the best in geek culture - cosplay, crafts, comics, websites, miniseries, video games, fashion, podcasts, etc. It is such an honour for IGGPPC to even be in the top 5.

So on August 17th, The Geekie Awards show is live in Hollywood, CA. Two staff members (Leslie, one of the co-founders, being one of them) are heading to Hollywood for the show. I'm so excited for them and also a little jealous of all the people they're going to meet and the hands they'll shake. But I'd also probably be a shaking mess. We are taking donations, however, to help send the two ladies to Hollywood.

It's been a crazy year and a bit for IGGPPC and I'm so proud and happy to be apart of it. I love the ladies I work with and the crazy ideas we come up with. And the community is so positive and supportive and just filled with amazing people. This entire experience has been so incredibly wonderful.

Carnival Collection

If you read my blog, you've seen me write about my love for loose leaf teas, both from Davids Tea and Teavana. Recently, Davids Tea came out with a Carnival Collection - carnival treats-flavoured teas, balloon and Ferris wheel patterned mugs, cotton candy pink glasses and more. Basically, everything that I love and that I'm a sucker for.

For my birthday, I actually got the Carnival Collection box which has packs of all 5 teas from the collection -
Cherry Snowcone, Caramel Corn, Cotton Candy, Pink Lemonade, and Root Beer Float. Collection boxes are perfect for gifts and perfect for someone to sample all the flavours in one collection. And the reality was, I wanted to try all the flavours, so it was a wonderful gift.

Two weeks after receiving this gift and I've now tried all 5 flavours. I've only tried each one once and I definitely need to brew them again and try them different ways (hot, iced, with or without sweetener).

But these were my initial reactions and opinions of the flavours:

Cherry Snowcone - iced, without sweetener
Initially all I could smell was sour cherries, before and after I added the hot water. Once I drank it, I wasn't super impressed. I just found the flavour very subtle and not very 'cherry'. I think when I make it next, I'll add a bit more tea and some rock sugar to it. Hopefully that will pump up the taste.

Caramel Corn - iced, without sweetener
It's kind of crazy how much this tea smells exactly like caramel corn. It also tastes exactly like popcorn. It wasn't very caramely but it reminded me of pink candy popcorn - the one with the elephant on the box. I enjoyed it.

Cotton Candy, hot, without sweetener
I was the most excited for this tea which is why I drank it hot. I didn't want to wait to have it cold. It smells very sweet and the initial taste is exactly cotton candy. I really liked the tea. It was sweet, but not overly. I'll be trying it iced with some sweetener soon.

Pink Lemonade - iced, without sweetener
By far this was my favourite of the collection. It has a lovely lemon smell and taste, but I wouldn't say it's Pink Lemonade. But that's ok. It actually really reminded me of these candies my Mom bought me when I was younger - Love Hearts, which is very alright with me. I really want to buy more of this one.

Root Beer Float - iced, with rock sugar
The tea definitely has a smell of root beer and so does the taste. But I'm such a huge fan of actual root beer, that the tea just didn't live up to it. I expected it sweeter and more of a strong flavour. I'll definitely try making this again iced with some different tea and rock sugar amounts.

Along with buying all the Pink Lemonade tea, I'm still eyeing up a few other things from this collection - their gradient mugs which look like cotton candy, and their honey sticks.

I'm really happy I got this collection and I get to play around with the teas. I'll be trying all of them iced, hot, sweetened and unsweetened.

Have you tried any of the Carnival flavours?

Birthday

Last weekend was my 30th birthday. It was an absolutely perfect day. We had a relaxing morning and headed out after lunch. We went to Moonlight Beach for a couple of hours. It was a hot day but it was so windy, which was kind of nice since it kept us from melting from the heat. The wind also made the lake a bit wavy which was fun when we went swimming.

My new Orla Kiely purse that I got for my birthday from my best friend!

See, windy! My hair was all over the place!

We then squeezed in a viewing of Tammy for a late afternoon movie. It was really cute and funny. I thought it was just going to be a silly comedy, but it was more than that and I really enjoyed it.

Around the corner from our apartment there's a fry truck that only opens during the Summer months so we finally tried it for dinner. We both had burgers and fries and it was so delicious! Adam also made me a homemade birthday cake - Pink Lemonade flavour! I was completely floored by the cake. It's SO pink lemonade. Absolutely yummy and he picked up a container of Birthday Cake ice cream.

It only seemed appropriate to open a pack of Razzles on my birthday, which my Aunt had given me... thirty, flirty, and thriving! I hope you get the reference.

I was completely spoiled by Adam. I'm pretty sure I acted like a kid on Christmas morning when I opened the Powerpuff Girls boxset. I'm ridiculously excited to start watching it!

It couldn't have been a better birthday. I feel beyond lucky and grateful!

Outside Adventures

Recently we headed out on an afternoon walk at College Boreal, which is fairly close to our apartment. The property surrounding the college is beautiful. The fields are filled with wild flowers, and there are ducks and a dam in the water on the property.

I'm in love with the landscape here and how there's just rocks jutting out from everywhere.

We ended up taking a different turn than normal and found ourselves with a gorgeous view. It was a perfect Summer day.

I hope you're having a great week!

Margarita Cupcakes

I had an urge to make some cupcakes recently. Now, I have tons of cupcake recipe books and magazines. I have favourites though. One of them is a small special edition Betty Crocker magazine that has cupcake recipes that you use a Betty Crocker cake mix for the base.

Since Adam's a big fan of everything lime, and I knew we had tequila on hand, I settled on the Margarita Cupcakes. This is the exact recipe here. Though, I did make a few alterations to the recipe.

Margarita Cupcakes

Ingredients:

1
box Betty Crocker SuperMoist lemon cake mix
1/2
cup water
1/2
cup unsweetened applesauce
1/2
cup gold tequila
3
eggs
1
box lime-flavored gelatin
I then followed the directions for the cupcakes in the recipeThe cupcakes were a neon green inside after baking them which I thought was so fun. I'm going to try making cupcakes with other flavours of gelatin in the future. I loved the flavour and the colour they turned inside.

I didn't follow the frosting recipe that was given. I made my own buttercream with butter, icing sugar, lime juice, food colouring, and water.

While the cupcakes were cooling, we went out to The Bulk Barn to pick up some things and we found these lime jelly candies which we thought would be perfect for the cupcakes.

The cupcakes were so good and I highly recommend this recipe. I'm interested in trying it with some other flavour combinations and maybe switching up the alcohol or omitting it altogether.

What I'm Loving Now

I swear time just keeps speeding up. How is it my birthday tomorrow?!? I've been so busy lately with everything going on in my life. I haven't even really made any plans for my birthday tomorrow. I have some ideas but nothing's concrete. I've just been too preoccupied.

City of Glass

Thank goodness for audio books. If it wasn't for them, I'd never get through any books. Well, just comics, since they're shorter and the digital copies are perfect to read in waiting rooms or break rooms. But audio books, I listen to while I clean, pack boxes, bake cookies, do dishes, sew, etc. I've been flying through them.

I just finished the third book in The Mortal Instruments series, City of Glass. I have to say it was my favourite book so far in the series. It answered some questions and also brought up some interesting plot developments. I also thoroughly enjoyed the supernatural aspect in this book. It was more apparent in this book than the previous ones. I've heard the books get worse after this one. But I think I'm going to continue with the story. I'm too invested in the characters and story line. It doesn't seem right to give up on the series when there's more to it.

The Pretty One

Lately mine and Adam's work schedules have not been lining up. I've been spending a lot of afternoons and evenings by myself. And because I have things to do that can be done in front of the TV (filling cat toys, flipping pouches inside out, etc.) I've been watching a lot. I finally watched The Pretty One earlier this week. I think Zoe Kazan is adorable and I've enjoyed all the other movies I've seen her in. So when I saw this trailer a while ago and saw that it not only stars her, but also Jake Johnson (from New Girl), I knew I had to watch it.

The movie was super cute and quirky. Yes, I know some people hate that word - 'quirky'. But it was. Both Zoe and Jake play such honest characters that you just fall in love with them. I also fell in love with the settings and details throughout the movie - the wardrobe, furniture, backyard, etc. I want to own this movie so I can watch it over and over again.

Colour Palettes

I've started looking online and in stores for furniture and accessories for our house. I've also spent some time talking to my Mom about paint colours and curtains. I'm really enjoying this part of getting a house. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration and it's caused me to get lost numerous times in Pinterest search results.

Weekend Adventures

This past weekend we headed to Hamilton. It was a weekend of birthday celebrations! And the weather was perfect all weekend!

Taking pictures in the car... The clouds looked so perfect!

I picked up an adorable Black Widow at Kool Stuff in downtown Hamilton.

I met up with my two best friends on Saturday to exchange birthday gifts. My one friend's birthday is about a week before mine so we always exchange our gifts on the same day. Sheldon (Mary's cat) was in love with all the tissue paper. I just kept piling it on him and he didn't care. After opening gifts we headed out to find Bubble Tea, lunch, and we picked up some Asian treats.

A new blind box that I received from Mary. I'm scared about how many I'll buy at Fan Expo.

On Saturday night, my parents had family over for a barbecue, drinks, and a bon fire to celebrate my birthday. It was a great evening and I completely stuffed myself with s'mores!

It was a fantastic weekend visiting friends and family!
