What I'm Loving Now: Books

I haven't been reading as much as I'd like to lately. I'm too tired at night and I find myself falling asleep in the middle of sentences. But I have been able to squeeze in a few audiobooks over the last month.

The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

"A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives."

The reason I picked up this book was because I kept seeing it everywhere. It was in every email I received about bestsellers and top books of the summer. Also, let's be honest, the cover also made me want to read it.

I enjoy books and movies that take multiple stories and have them intertwine and overlap in some way. This is how The Nest is written. So even if one character's story didn't thrill you, you would soon be on to reading about the next character. I found the book lighthearted and engaging. I laughed out loud a few times and other times I couldn't stop listening because I wanted to know what was going to happen. I definitely recommend this book if you're looking for something entertaining and not too serious.

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

"The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays. "

I have to admit I didn't know much of Amy Schumer's comedy. I saw the odd short stand up segment with her but that's it. Then in a matter of a couple of weeks I watched Trainwreck and read her book. I loved both. I find her humour and honesty hilarious and refreshing. I enjoyed her book thoroughly. Her insights and stories made for an interesting read.

With the weather getting cooler I'm ready to jump back into my Young Adult fantasy and sci-fi novels. They fit well with grey days and cooler weather in my opinion.

What I'm Reading Now

Never in my life have I had so many books on the go. I have two novels on my bedside table that are both partially read, an audiobook over half way done, and a graphic novel sitting on the floor that hasn't been touched in a couple of weeks.

This is what happens when new books are released and I can't stop myself from starting them even when I have books on the go already.

1. The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney (audiobook)

I needed a new audiobook and this book has been in my face constantly. Chapters Indigo has been advertising it like crazy in their emails so I looked to see if there was an audiobook. There is and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. It's a great story, very interesting, and I'm enjoying all the characters.

2. The Importance of Being Married by Gemma Townley (novel)

I picked this book up at a garage sale and it's been sitting on my shelf forever. I thought it was time to read it and that it would be the perfect light book to read throughout Summer. Even though the story isn't too complex, I'm still really enjoying it. It's an easy read and I've found myself hooked on the story line and main characters. Unfortunately I've put the book aside while I read the next book in my list.

3. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne (novel)

As I shared before, I picked this book up on its release day and haven't had the chance to finish it with how busy I've been. This book will be read before anything else however because I want to continue with the Harry Potter story.

4. Black Widow: The Sting of the Widow by assorted writers (graphic novel)

This is a compilation of Black Widow comic books that jumps through the years. I've only read the first couple of comics in this book but it's fun to see how the styles change from comic to comic depending on the year. Black Widow has easily become one of my favourite characters and I'm enjoying reading more of her history.

On top of the above list, there's a handful of novels, comics, and audiobooks I'm itching to get to so I'm expecting this crazy list of books to stay heavy for a while.

What I'm Loving Now

I hope you're having a fantastic weekend! I'm actually off this weekend which is lovely. Spending time with my boys and Mr. and getting things done around the house is exactly what I needed. We're making Christmas plans, working out Christmas gift details, and doing some decorating.

Wookie Cookies

One thing I've been planning is what Christmas baking I want to do. I'm a huge fan of gingerbread cookies, and the idea of turning some of them into Wookies is extremely tempting.

House Decorating

After much discussion and numerous furniture store visits, it looks like we've settled on a couch to buy for our basement family room. Because I know the colour of the couch, I've been doing some online window shopping to get ideas for how to make the rest of the family room extra cozy since it'll be our main TV/movie/gaming room. I've settled on this colour scheme.

Ready Player One

I've been busy lately with sewing and cleaning and getting the house ready for Christmas decorations, so I recently flew through the Ready Player One audio book. I cannot recommend this book enough! It was so good and completely surpassed my expectations. Wil Wheaton narrates the book and he does such a good job. The story line is incredibly interesting and the pop culture references were great! The writing is so descriptive that I could see the world the character was in. Seriously, read this book!

What I'm Loving Now

Thanks to my local public library, I have so many audio books at my fingertips!! I look forward to listening to my audio books all the time now. Because the faster I go through the current one I'm listening to, the sooner I can start the next. It's like I'm insatiable for books. Young Adult books to be specific. I find myself writing down books titles when I'm out shopping so I can look them up in the library catalogue.

Clearly, finally using my library card and the online catalogue was the best thing to happen recently.

Eleanor & Park

So I finally read Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I've heard nothing but good things about this book since it came out. I've had lots of friends recommend it to me. Well, it was just as good, if not better, than I had expected.

The characters were described so perfectly. They seemed so real and the feelings they had really hit home with me. I felt for them. The X-Men references in the book put a smile on my face and I really found myself emotionally invested in the story. My only complaint is how the book ended. I will not spoil it because I think everyone needs to read it. But, the ending didn't satisfy me. To be honest, it kind of felt rushed.

I'm a huge fan of Rainbow Rowell's writing. Her pop culture references are great and I adore how she writes the men or boys in her books. You actually like them. They're usually stand-up guys. Yes, they make mistakes and they're not perfect, but I find myself rooting for them in every book I've read of hers.

Landline

Landline is Rowell's newest book and I flew through the audio book in two days. Again, I loved the writing and the flow of the story. The characters were great - flawed, real, personable. I didn't completely connect with the story as much as I did with her previous books, but I still enjoyed it.

After discussing it with a friend, I think I've really enjoyed all of Rowell's audio books because they're narrated by the same person, Rebecca Lowman. There's just something about her voice and how she does the male voices. I've listened to enough audio books to know that some narrators can have voices that distract me slightly or at least take a bit to get used to. But not Lowman.

I just started the next Mortal Instruments audio book in the series, City Of Fallen Angels. I'm hoping to get in a lot of listening time next week.

What are you reading now? Any book recommendations?

Current Obsessions

My life seems to be sleep, eat, work, sew and repeat. If I'm not at my day job, I'm working at home on 'Sparklegirl'. I can't complain, though, because I love every minute of it.
I watch a lot of TV boxsets while I'm sewing, ironing and cutting out new projects. I'm currently re-watching Scrubs and I also started Bones. My best friend has been telling me for a long time I should watch it. Well, I gave it a chance and I finished season one incredibly fast. I got hooked. I now have season two in my possession so I'm guessing I'll be watching a good chunk of it over the weekend since I'm off and I plan on staying in to sew. Anyone else watch Bones? I love the chemistry of the whole cast.

Me and Adam recently started watching The IT Crowd together. Since the seasons, or series, are only 6 episodes long, we have flown through all 4 seasons. We have a couple episodes left and then we're done. It's such a great, funny show. I adore the characters and the British humour. I'm sad that we're almost done it.

Other than TV watching, I'm reading Catching Fire right now and listening to Tina Fey's Bossypants audio book. It's perfect for when I drive into Hamilton. It's absolutely hilarious and very interesting and I love hearing Tina read the book. Next on my list is Mindy Kaling's 'Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)' audio book.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
