After chatting with a fellow red-eared slider owner it hit me how old our little turtles are. They're almost two years old and for some reason it doesn't feel like we've had them that long. But it makes sense since we're able to tell the sex of each of them now (well, we're like 90% sure).
Tank has continued to have the wider and darker coloured shell. In the last couple of months he's grown gigantic, Freddy Krueger-like nails which is a sign that he's male. As well as his tail is longer and thicker. He's actually the calmer turtle of the two. We can pick him up to check out his shell or compare size no problem.
Koopa on the other hand hates being handled. Koopa squirms and fidgets which makes it hard to photograph her. I say 'her' but we're still not 100% positive Koopa is female. But since there's no crazy long nails and the tail is smaller, we're assuming Koopa is female. We're just going to watch her as she gets to be full grown in case there's a chance Koopa just hasn't hit sexual maturity yet. But if you compare the two of them, Koopa seems to be female. Koopa has kept the brighter colours, though she's not as bright green as when we first got her. I absolutely love the gold colour that trims both their shells.
Later this year we'll be transferring them to their giant aquarium which I'm pretty excited for. Adding in a new dock and rocks will be fun. Plus it'll be great for them to have so much room to swim. Right now they're dominating their current aquarium. Their heater and filter are constantly being moved and Tank has the time of his life digging in rocks. It's been interesting having these turtles around as pets. I'm so happy Adam convinced me to adopt these guys.

Tank & Koopa Adventures
Monday, 28 September 2015
Tank and Koopa have been such a fun experience. I've never had any pet like this before and I didn't realize how quickly I'd get attached. The first couple of weeks were stressful. Tank was super shy and barely ate. He buried his head in the rocks whenever possible. Koopa started off as a pig and super active. Then for about a week he decided he wasn't going to eat anymore.
Stress! My maternal instincts kicked into overdrive and I didn't know what to do. I spent a lot of time googling options and we bought some dried shrimp to feed them along with the pellets. We also introduced them to green leaf lettuce. Eventually we got both of them eating. Tank isn't as shy anymore and Koopa is back to being his super active self.
Look how tiny they are! I know they're going to get huge so I need to enjoy them while they're this size now. They hang out in this container when Adam cleans their aquarium. They're messy little guys.
I love that I can finally tell the difference between them. And their little tails melt my heart.
Sorry for the turtle pictures spam but who doesn't enjoy baby turtle pictures?!

Welcome Tank & Koopa

Ever since I met Adam he's wanted turtles. We've put it off for years because we never had room for his giant aquarium. As soon as we bought our house and set up the big desk for the 75-gallon aquarium (which is waiting for the turtles when they get bigger), he was on the hunt for baby turtles. He's been waiting patiently (cough*impatiently*cough) for months now for the reptile store up here to get babies in. Well they showed up last week so we raced to the store to pick out two baby red-eared sliders.
The baby turtles are way too cute and I'm so excited to watch them grow and to try different veggies with them. It's fun having more babies to spoil!

Meet Tank...
& Koopa...
The cats love them. They just watch the tank. They try to sniff and paw at the turtles and it's adorable.
