Wild Blueberry Adventures

When we moved to Sudbury we heard from co-workers about the wild blueberries that grew throughout and around the city. Then Summer happened and we saw cars parked up and down all the highways leading out of the city, saw people with baskets upon baskets climbing out of bushes on the side of the road. That's when we decided to go on the hunt for some wild blueberries of our own.

We've tried a few different locations in the city, though last Summer proved to be a bad season for the wild blueberries, which led to Sudbury having a bad black bear problem in the city since they didn't have enough berries to eat.

Finally, three years after moving here, we've found a few good places to find wild blueberries. This year we hit the jackpot, especially since the blueberries were larger than we've ever seen. Wild blueberries are tiny in comparison to normal ones you'd find at the grocery store. They also grow only ankle-high instead of being on plants eye-level. It makes for an awkward time picking the wild blueberries a few inches from the ground.

These plants were all over the blueberry patches. I have no idea what it is but they were really tall (maybe 2 feet high) and really pretty.

It's exciting to spot a patch full of all those juicy blueberries.

We came home with 10 cups of blueberries which means I can make 2 pies and have leftovers.

The morning after picking the blueberries I made us pancakes with some of them. They're so incredibly juicy and full of flavour.

I made our first wild blueberry pie earlier this week and I have blueberries in the freezer for a second pie in a couple of weeks.

The recipe I use for fruit pies is super easy:

1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
3/4 cup water
4 cups fruit

Directions:
1. In a pot mix sugar and cornstarch together, add water. Bring to a boil on medium heat.

2. Cook for 2 minutes while stirring often.

3. Add your fruit and mix well. Continue cooking mixture for 3-7 minutes. The time depends on how soft the fruit is and how you want your filling - more chunks of fruit or more mushed up.

The pie turned out incredible. The filling was nice and thick and the blueberries are really tasty with the graham cracker crust.

Since we had great luck with our wild blueberry picking during our two hour outing last week, we might try going out again to get more to put in the freezer.

Outside Adventures

Hello! I hope things have been well for you. I've been super busy with lots of different things. Ever since the move life has been non-stop.

Anyways, before we moved we went Wild Blueberry picking. We were out for over 2 hours and it was pretty tiring but it was an absolutely perfect day to be out. And we got lots of blueberries!

By this point I got in trouble for taking pictures instead of picking blueberries.. whoops! It was just so pretty. I felt like I was in a magical forest at some points.

I was able to make up a wild blueberry pie with lots of berries leftover to add to cereal and yogurt and just general eating! Nom!

I don't know if we'll get a chance to go picking again. But we did much better this Summer than last year since we knew what to look for and where to go!

Outside Adventures

When I heard that wild blueberries were all over Sudbury, I knew we had to go find some! But we didn't know where to start looking and after an Internet search, I didn't find much help. So Adam got some advice from a co-worker and we headed out. We had no idea what to look for. After googling images of blueberry bushes and seeing none, we were close to giving up. But then we looked down. The blueberries were at our ankles!

Heading into a field like this made me a tad scared about meeting a moose or bear (which wouldn't be weird at all in our area).

Blueberry Picking

We found them!

The wild blueberries are pretty tiny but so yummy!

Blueberry Picking

After searching two different areas and getting attacked by mosquitoes, we ended up with a decent haul.

Blueberry Picking

We ate a lot of the blueberries with yogurt, in our cereal and just by the handful but I decided to make up a cake with some of them too. I threw some blueberries in the white cake mix and then when I made homemade lemon buttercream I added some into the mixer to blend into the frosting. It was so good!

What does one make with a container full of wild blueberries?!? Lemon blueberry cake of course!

A couple of week's ago, we had company up and we finally checked out Science North. It was incredibly cool. We watched a really interesting 4D movie about wild fires and there were lots of live creatures to check out! Spiders and other creepy crawlers, a room filled with butterflies, snakes, turtles, a porcupine, and a beaver.

I know this isn't the best photo but I had to show you this adorable turtle. He looks like he has a smile on his face!

Now that we're heading into Autumn and I'm working, I really want to plan some day trips and activities for the next couple of months. I want to take advantage of the amazing Autumn weather!
